2019.02.10 – Kevin Durant hit a clutch comeback 3-pointer in the final minute that helped the Golden State Warriors cap a come from behind 19-point deficit in the first quarter to beat the Miami Heat 120-118 at Oracle Arena.

A lackluster start for Golden State turned into a frantic finish and another win thanks to a big shooting night from Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry.

“We started off sluggish,” Durant said. “They made shots, they were excited to play against us. We treated it like it was a Sunday walk in the park. … After a while we just locked in.”

Once locked in, Durant, Thompson and Curry are really good at playing basketball. KD scored 39 points on 16-of-24 shooting, despite going only 1 of 7 from distance. Thompson had 29 points on a 11-of-21 clip overall and 6-of-13 mark from the perimeter. Curry added 25 points while going 9 of 18 from the field and 5 of 10 from distance.

Durant was a big reason for the comeback, scoring 11 straight points for Golden State down the stretch before finally missing a late 3-pointer that Cousins corralled for a rebound and drew a foul on the put-back attempt that gave the Warriors their 11th double-digit comeback of the season.

Technically, it was DeMarcus Cousins that made a pair of foul shots to give the Warriors a 120-118 lead with 5.4 seconds left. Then, Heat guard Dion Waiters missed a 28-footer at the buzzer. But the Warriors (40-15) collected their 15th win out of the past 16 games mostly by leaning on their top scorers.

The Heat were upset because they believed Durant double-dribbled before that late attempt and that there was a 26-8 free throw disparity in Golden State’s favor.

“Those are tough calls to make, but everybody saw it. It’s right there in front of everybody,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Durant losing the handle and starting to dribble again. “That should be a violation and you can’t miss those calls. But we had our chances, it was back and forth.”

Miami overcame an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on a 3-pointer by Justise Winslow. Josh Richardson and Dwyane Wade then had back-to-back steals and layups to put the Heat up 118-115 with 51.5 seconds to play.

Durant then tied it with a 3-pointer and Cousins made his big shots after both teams missed from long range to give the Warriors their 15th win in 16 games.

“I was really happy that he was out there at the end of the game,” coach Steve Kerr said of Cousins, playing his 10th game for Golden State. “It’s good experiences for him because he hasn’t been out there much since he’s come back to close games.”

Klay Thompson scored 29 points and Stephen Curry added 25 for Golden State.

Richardson finished with a career-high 37 points with help from eight 3-pointers. Waiters added 24 and Winslow had 22 in Miami’s fifth loss in six games.

“No moral victories really in this game, but we played pretty well and we lost a close one,” Winslow said. “Some things were out of our control, but the way we competed was what you like to see out of a team.”

The Heat went on a 24-2 run early in the first quarter and quickly built a 19-point lead against the slow-starting Warriors. But Golden State scored the final six points of the frame to cut the deficit to 10 points after one.

The Warriors went on a 12-0 run early in the third quarter starting with a 3-pointer from Curry to take a 66-61 lead and the game stayed close from there.

HEAT TIP-INS

– Wade played despite a scary fall Friday in Sacramento that left him with a bruised back. “Any one of us would probably be in a body brace right now. But he’s built like Captain America,” Spoelstra said. Wade got a standing ovation following a video tribute during the first quarter timeout in his final regular-season game in the Bay Area before retiring after the season.

– Wade finished with 10 points and exchanged jerseys with Curry after the game. “It was an amazing video tribute,” he said. “They really put some thought into that. Afterward I said to my teammates, ‘That was dope.’ That was a great tribute.”

WARRIORS TIP-INS

– Andre Iguodala sat out after tweaking his left hamstring on Friday.

– The Warriors have scored at least 100 points in 26 straight games, their longest streak since a 36-gamer in 2016-17.

– Draymond Green was called for his 11th technical foul early in the fourth quarter when he wanted a goal-tending called when Bam Adebayo blocked Shaun Livingston’s shot.

– Durant was called for his 10th technical later in the quarter.

FREE AGENCY TALK

The Warriors have grown tired of talk about NBA free agency, but Kerr was happy to chime in when it came to baseball’s market. When asked about the possibility that free agent slugger Bryce Harper could sign with the San Francisco Giants, the noted Los Angeles Dodgers fan was all in favor of it.

“I’d love it if Bryce Harper came here,” Kerr said. “Does my opinion matter? Bryce, come to the Giants. Let’s go!”
