San Francisco 49ers: 53-man Roster

Here a Position-by-position Breakdown

2019.08.31 – The San Francisco 49ers roster has finally been set to 53 after the team made 22 cuts ahead of Saturday’s 1 p.m. PT deadline. It’s important to remember that John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are likely to tinker with the roster as the rest of the 31 clubs begin to take shape. Also, it’s worth noting that San Francisco is No. 2 in the waiver order, so expect changes to the roster to occur in the next 24 hours. With that, here is a position-by-position breakdown of where the 49ers currently stand.

QUARTERBACK (3)

Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard

2019.08.31 – Not much of a surprise here. Shanahan said earlier in the week that the 49ers have full intentions on keeping three quarterbacks on the roster.

“If you have three NFL quarterbacks, they are not easy to come by regardless of where you draft them or anything,” Shanahan said. “When you have that, you do not just give that away. Sometimes that takes years to find.”

RUNNING BACK (4)

Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert and Kyle Juszczyk

2019.08.31 –

2019.08.31 – Jerick McKinnon was the biggest question mark heading into roster cuts. McKinnon suffered another setback from his surgically repaired ACL ahead of the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers. The 49ers placed McKinnon on season-ending Injured Reserve List for the second-straight season. The 49ers also parted ways with Jeff Wilson Jr., who came off of a monster performance against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night. The 49ers have the option to stash Wilson Jr. on the practice squad if he does become available through the waiver wire.

WIDE RECEIVER (7)

Kendrick Bourne, Jalen Hurd, Marquise Goodwin, Richie James Jr., Dante Pettis, Deebo Samuel and Trent Taylor

2019.08.31 –

2019.08.31 – Wide receiver was one of the most intriguing battles heading into the preseason. Goodwin, Pettis, Samuel and Hurd appeared as locks in early August. The 49ers set on seven receivers as the team parted ways with veteran wideout Jordan Matthews. The 49ers will be without two of their key pass catchers to open the season. Third year wideout Trent Taylor, who was having a strong camp, is dealing with a foot injury while Hurd is nursing a back injury.

TIGHT END (4)

George Kittle, Ross Dwelley, Kaden Smith and Levine Toilolo

2019.08.31 -The 49ers decided to go with four tight ends. The team placed Garrett Celek on the physically unable to perform list as the tight end underwent back surgery earlier this offseason. Celek will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8)

Joe Staley, Laken Tomlinson, Weston Richburg, Mike McGlinchey, Mike Person, Ben Garland, Justin Skule and Daniel Brunskill

2019.08.31 – The 49ers parted ways with former 2016 first round pick Joshua Garnett. Ben Garland is expected to be the top backup interior offensive lineman.

2019.08.31 –

DEFENSIVE LINE (10)

DeForest Buckner, Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Arik Armstead, Solomon Thomas, D.J. Jones, Ronald Blair III, Kentavius Street, Jullian Taylor and Sheldon Day

2019.08.31 – Expect a shakeup in the group as Street will be placed on Injured Reserved with designation to return. The defensive lineman may become eligible to rejoin the team after eight weeks. Lynch noted he may use Street’s roster spot to address other needs in the coming days (see safety).

LINEBACKER (5)

Kwon Alexander, Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Mark Nzeocha and Azeez Al-Shaair

2019.08.31 –

2019.08.31 – The 49ers let go of Elijah Lee, who has been dealing with a broken thumb. Lee’s departure opened the door for Greenlaw as the team’s starting SAM linebacker. Undrafted rookie Al-Shaair impressed through the preseason, beating out several veterans for a roster spot.

CORNERBACKS (6)

Richard Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon, K’Waun Williams, Jason Verrett, D.J. Reed Jr. and Emmanuel Moseley

2019.08.31 –

2019.08.31 – The 49ers liked what they saw out of Verrett and anticipate the cornerback being available Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

SAFETY (3)

Jimmie Ward, Jaquiski Tartt and Tarvarius Moore

2019.08.31 – The 49ers decided to keep three safeties on the roster following initial roster cuts. Versatility played a big factor in the 49ers decisions, given Ward, Reed and Moore all have experience at both safety and cornerback. Lynch alluded that he may address this position once the 49ers Injured Reserve list shakes out.

SPECIALISTS (3)

Robbie Gould, Mitch Wishnowsky and Colin Holba

2019.08.31 – No real surprises here. However, the 49ers will have to make a decision once long snapper Kyle Nelson serves the final six games of his 10-game suspension.

The 49ers Initial 53-man Roster and Position-by-position Breakdown

2018.09.01 – The San Francisco 49ers have whittled their roster down to an initial list of 53 players. The team made 21 cuts prior to Saturday’s 1 p.m. PT deadline. Before we dive into who made the team, it’s important to add the caveat that John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are likely to tinker with the roster throughout the weekend.

QUARTERBACK (2) Jimmy Garoppolo and C.J. Beathard; No surprises here. Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Nick Mullens (assuming he clears waivers) will be on the team’s practice squad for a second straight season.

RUNNING BACK (5) Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida, Alfred Morris, Raheem Mostert and Kyle Juszczyk
This picture became clearer following Morris’ outstanding performance against the Indianapolis Colts during Week 3 of the preseason. There’s still plenty of intrigue in who will be active on gamedays. News coming out on Saturday of a potential serious knee injury to McKinnon really shakes things up. The team’s starting running back went down “cutting on air,” per Shanahan. If an MRI reveals the worst case scenario, the 49ers could be in the market to add a running back over the next few days. “We’re nervous about it for sure,” Shanahan said.
Regardless, it’s safe to assume that Morris and Breida will be carrying the load out of the backfield for the 49ers to open the season.

WIDE RECEIVER (6)

WIDE RECEIVER (6) Pierre Garçon, Marquise Goodwin, Trent Taylor, Dante Pettis, Kendrick Bourne and Richie James.  We thought that there was a chance the 49ers would keep seven receivers, but the team ultimately decided that keeping Aaron Burbridge solely for special teams was a luxury it couldn’t afford. The 49ers also have four weeks before they make a decision on Victor Bolden, who will begin the season on the NFL’s Suspended List.

TIGHT END (3) Garrett Celek, George Kittle and Cole Wick; The news here is that Wick beat out Cole Hikutini for the third tight end spot. All three are likely to be active on gameday.

OFFENSIVE LINE (9)

OFFENSIVE LINE (9) Joe Staley, Laken Tomlinson, Weston Richburg, Mike Person, Mike McGlinchey, Joshua Garnett, Erik Magnuson, Garry Gilliam and Shon Coleman; Cutting Jonathan Cooper means that Magnuson’s hamstring likely won’t keep him out for much (if any) of the regular season. Shanahan said that the goal is to have five inside guys and four outside linemen. The trade for Coleman got the 49ers to that quota.

DEFENSIVE LINE (9)

DEFENSIVE LINE (9) DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, D.J. Jones, Earl Mitchell, Solomon Thomas, Cassius Marsh, Ronald Blair, Sheldon Day and Jullian Taylor; Cutting Jeremiah Attaochu may have been the biggest surprise of the day. Attaochu was expected to play a major role in the 49ers pass rush in 2018. John Lynch said that various injuries to Attaochu didn’t give the 49ers enough opportunities to adequately evaluate the defensive lineman. Blair’s versatility and strong performance in the preseason finale is likely what locked up his roster spot.

LINEBACKER (6)

LINEBACKER (6) Fred Warner, Malcolm Smith, Brock Coyle, Elijah Lee, Mark Nzeocha and Dekoda Watson; This list is as expected. Reuben Foster moved to the NFL’s Suspended List on Saturday and will be back in Week 3.

SECONDARY (10)

SECONDARY (10) Richard Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon, K’Waun Williams, Jaquiski Tartt, Adrian Colbert, D.J. Reed, Tarvarius Moore, Marcell Harris, Jimmie Ward and Greg Mabin.

SPECIALISTS (3) Robbie Gould, Bradley Pinion and Kyle Nelson; Same trio as last season.

SF 49ers Hire Chip Kelly as New Head Coach –

The SF 49ers announced that Chip Kelly has been named the 20th head coach in franchise history.

“We are thrilled to announce Chip Kelly as the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers,” CEO Jed York said. “Chip has a proven track record at both the college and NFL levels that speaks for itself.

We believe strongly that he is the right man to get this team back to competing for championships. I look forward to watching Trent and Chip work closely to build a team that will make us all proud.”

“Chip possesses all the qualities we were looking for in our next head coach,” General Manager Trent Baalke said.

“He has demonstrated the ability to be innovative everywhere he has coached and has had great success throughout his career. Chip’s passion for the game and vision for the future of this team clearly stood out to us during the search process. He is an extremely driven individual that I look forward to working with.”

“I would like to thank Jed, Trent, and the York family for this tremendous opportunity to be the head coach of the SF 49ers,” Head Coach Chip Kelly said. “As one of the most historic franchises in the National Football League, I realize the high standards and expectations that this position demands and I embrace the challenges ahead.

My immediate focus is to build the best coaching staff possible, one that will maximize the abilities of each of our players and put us in the best position to win football games.”

Chip Kelly joins the 49ers with 26 seasons of coaching experience at both the NFL and collegiate levels, including the past three seasons as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Before joining the Eagles, Kelly served as the head coach at the University of Oregon (2009-12) after spending the previous two seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator (2007-08).

Prior to joining Oregon, Kelly was the offensive coordinator at the University of New Hampshire (1999-2006).
