Chapman’s HR and Giants hit 10 doubles to rout Dodgers
2024.06.30 – Matt Chapman homered and drove in three runs, and the San Francisco Giants hit 10 doubles to rout the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 on Sunday for a series win.
It was the team’s most doubles since the New York Giants had 12 at Brooklyn on April 11, 1912.
Every starter had a hit for the Giants, and San Francisco finished with a season-high 11 extra-base hits to take the rubber game for its first series win at home against the rival Dodgers since June 2022 in front of a sellout crowd of 40,428 at Oracle Park.
“We’re resilient,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said. “After tough losses, we come out and do stuff like that almost every time. … We’ve got to roll some games together leading up to the (All-Star) break. This was a good start in what is kind of a tough stretch right now.”
Los Angeles starter James Paxton (7-2) allowed a career-high nine earned runs and 12 hits in four innings, losing for the first time in four career starts against the Giants.
“They were just on the fastball today,” Paxton said. “We tried to go to some other things, but they were just all over it.”
Jorge Soler, David Villar, Heliot Ramos and Patrick Bailey all had run-scoring doubles as San Francisco scored in each of the first four innings to build a 9-0 lead.

Bailey added another RBI double in the eighth.
“Today we just came on and had everything working for us,” Soler said, with Erwin Higueros interpreting. “It feels really good to take a series from an elite team like the Dodgers and gives us more confidence to know that we can play to that level.”
The Giants’ 22 runs in the series were their most in a three-game home series against the Dodgers in Oracle Park history.
It was the Giants’ first home series win over the Dodgers in more than two years, since June 10-12, 2022; they’d dropped each of the previous five series at Oracle Park, and Saturday evening, they’d lost in brutal fashion when the Dodgers scored seven runs in the 11th.

“I’ve been waiting my whole life for that,” Bivens said. “It’s really special. To be able to help the team win, to put us in a good position to help the bullpen, whatever they have me do, I’ll do it. I’m just happy I was able to help them out.”
Bivens, 30, signed with the Giants as a free agent two years ago after playing in France and three independent leagues. He continued to play in the Mexican League during the winter, something he credits for preparing him for the big leagues. He was the PCL Pitcher of the Month in May, then the Giants called him up June 16 for his big-league debut.
Sunday was Bivens’ first big-league start — he only had four in the minors — and he looked as if he’s been doing it for years after allowing the league’s highest-scoring team only four base-runners. He needed just 60 pitches to get through his five innings.

Chris Taylor homered and doubled in a run for Los Angeles, which had won four straight series against the Giants.
Ohtani went 0 for 5 with three strikeouts. He went 2-for-11 with a homer, three walks and five strikeouts in the series. The Giants were mostly burned after his two intentional walks: Will Smith delivered an RBI single Friday and a two-run double Saturday after Ohtani was put on in front of him.
San Francisco finished a 5-2 home-stand with series wins against the Cubs and Dodgers.
