Alanis’ Game-Tying Goalazo in Earthquakes Season Opener
2020.02.29 – The San Jose Earthquakes with Coach Matias Almeyda and general manager Jesse Fioranelli acquire long-sought center back Oswaldo Alanis from Mexican giant Chivas de Guadalajara on a one-year loan that is expected to be extended into a permanent deal at the end of the season.
It only took one game to validate that acquisition!
Alanis scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to give the Quakes a 2-2 tie with Toronto FC in their MLS season opener.
Wildly impressive first impression for Alanis, he featured on both of San Jose’s goals in Saturday’s draw, but it was his 95th minute, 25-yard, left-footed free-kick strike from the right side of the goal that knotted the score and etched a permanent place in all Quakes fans memories before the final whistle.
Alanis’ left foot magic
The goal was terribly impressive, but Alanis also set up the Quakes’ first goal — which made the score 2-1 — in the 53rd minute, with another brilliant strike from his left.
This one, a play-switching longball from the back left to the forward right, found Cristian Espinoza, whose speculative cross into the box found Andres Rios soaring right foot, which redirected it into the net.
Expect these long balls from Alanis to be a big part of the Quakes’ attack this year. MLS defenses will often concede long balls defensively because there are few players in the league that can actually go boot-to-boot with a 60-yard kick.
This is a newfound bit of easy offense for the Quakes.

The lack of midfield winners resonates loudly for the San Jose Quakes.
Toronto was able to open up a 2-0 lead because they won a most one-on-one battles in the middle of the attacking third and because they clogged up those lanes for the Quakes on the other end.
But it was jarring that the only one-vs-one wins the Quakes seemed to muster with the ball came on the flanks.
Rios pulled San Jose within one in the 53rd minute, scoring from the the left side. His performance was underwhelming — despite the nice goal — and especially for Magnus Eriksson and Valeri Qazaishvili (Vako) behind him.
In what was effectively a 4-3-3 formation with a holding midfielder (Jackson Yueill, who was strong Saturday), the lack of creativity in the center of the pitch was glaring.

Toronto FC (0-0-1) drew first blood in the 40th minute thanks to a controversial call by referee Armando Villarreal. With Toronto FC positioned for a corner kick, Jozy Altidore was taken down inside the box by Rios before the kick and Toronto was awarded a penalty kick.
Alejandro Pozuelo easily buried the ball past Quakes goalkeeper Daniel Vega for his first goal of the season.
Toronto FC dobuled its lead six minutes into the second half. Pozuelo led an counter-attack as he passed the ball out to Tsubasa Endoh. Endoh’s shot was kicked out by Vega, but Ritchie Laryea, who subbed in to start the second half, cleaned up the rebound for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.
“I thought it was great character to show some fight. It’s never good to go down 2-0. Especially the response after the (Toronto’s) second goal,” forward Chris Wondolowski said.
The game featured sloppiness by both sides and missed calls by the officiating that seemed to favor Toronto FC that had many of the Quakes players as well as Almeyda frustrated throughout the match.
Alanis’ goal saved the Quakes from a disappointing start to the season as they had started out 0-4 last year.
“I hope there will be many more (goals like that) as I try to do my best. I’m a defender but I can bring some things offensively to the team,” said Alanis.
GAME NOTES:
– San Jose Quakes registered 11 shots. Toronto FC had 10.
– San Jose had three corner kicks. Toronto FC has seven.
– Daniel Vega made two saves for San Jose.
– Quentin Westberg had three for Toronto.
