2018.10.29 – Klay Thompson broke teammate Stephen Curry’s NBA record with 14 3-pointers and finished with 52 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 149-124 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Monday night.

Thompson set the mark when he nailed a 3 with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. He was then mobbed by teammates as the players headed to the sideline for a timeout, with the Warriors leading 113-69. Curry hit 13 3-pointers in a win over New Orleans on Nov. 7, 2016. Thompson played only 27 minutes and sat out the fourth quarter.

He had been in a shooting slump to start the season, making just 5 of 36 from behind the arc in the Warriors’ first seven games. Thompson was 14 for 24 against the Bulls.

The All-Star guard busted out of the slump quickly with 22 points in the first quarter and had 36 at the half as Golden State was up 92-50. It was the second-highest scoring half by an NBA team. Phoenix scored 107 in the first half of a 173-143 victory over Denver in 1990.

Curry scored 23. Kevin Durant had 14 points and eight assists. And Chicago product Alfonzo McKinnie added 19 points and 10 rebounds as the two-time defending NBA champions improved to 7-1.

Zach LaVine and Antonio Blakeney led the Bulls with 21 points, and Wendell Carter Jr. scored 18.

Chicago probably would have been overmatched even at full strength. But with Lauri Markkanen, Kris Dunn, Bobby Portis and Denzel Valentine all out with injuries, this one got ugly in a hurry.

Thompson, whose previous season high was 19 points, nearly doubled that in the first half alone. And the Warriors set an NBA record for 3-pointers in a half with 17.

Thompson hit six 3s in the opening quarter. He hit his first three attempts from long range and scored 11 as the Warriors grabbed a 15-5 lead. But he was just getting started.

He surpassed his previous season scoring high when he buried a 3 off the dribble with just under three minutes left in the quarter, giving him 22 points and the Warriors a 36-21 edge.

TIP-INS

Warriors: G Shaun Livingston missed his second consecutive game because of a sore right foot. He also missed two in a row last week because of a bruised left knee. … McKinnie hit 4 of 6 3-pointers in his second NBA game in his hometown. As a rookie with Toronto last season, he played about five minutes in a game at Chicago.

Bulls: Former Bulls C Joakim Noah got a standing ovation when he was shown on the video board late in the first half. He was waived by the New York Knicks with two years and $37.8 million remaining on his contract on Oct. 13.

Warriors Blast the Rockets 114-81

Warriors Blast Rockets

The Golden State Warriors blasted their way into the NBA’s Conference Semifinals playoffs after eliminating the Houston Rockets 114-81 in Game 5 and eliminated any notion of no Stephen Curry no winning playoffs games.

The Warriors’ gunpowder for the tremendous blast came from a grander Draymond Green, louder because the game demanded it. On this night, in this series clincher, Green was the roar and the voice in Curry’s absence.

“You’ve seen all the comments the last couple days, everybody, they think Steph goes down and the entire series changed,” Green said. “We thought otherwise. So we wanted to come out and lock it in from the jump, make sure that we put our imprint on the game from the start, not let them get hope … “That was definitely my plan from the start.”

Green ended up with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 0 turnovers — while sitting out the fourth quarter of this blowout.

Green blasted out of the gates like a  thoroughbred — handing out four assists in the first few minutes, making both of his early three-point attempts and leading the Warriors to an instant 8-0 lead. The Warriors led by 17 at the end of the first quarter and by 22 at halftime.

Klay Thompson led the Golden State with 27 points on 14 shots.  He gave us a reminder of how good Thompson can be knocking down seven 3-pointers. Yes, the Warriors have two guys who can light up the scoreboard – Splash Brothers.

Two guys who can terrorize defenses. “He showed he’s the best two guard in the NBA,” Green said, “Hands down”.  Shaun Livingston started in place of the injured Stephen Curry and added 16 points.

The natural feeling entering Wednesday’s game was that Golden State would have a more difficult time scoring without the league’s reigning MVP, but soon after tip-off, it became apparent that was not going to be the case tonight.

The Rockets finally got on the board after James Harden sank a three-pointer and he was just getting started. Dwight Howard converted two free throws to pull within 8-5.

Harden would go on to score 15 more points in the quarter, doing his best to keep pace with Golden State. The only problem was, the rest of the Rockets combined to shoot 0-of-15 from the floor in the first frame, while the Warriors’ team thrived, pacing Golden State to a 37-20 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Harden began the second frame on the bench, forcing the rest of the Rockets to pick up the scoring slack, and they responded in kind. Harden then reentered the game and immediately got back to his scoring ways, accounting for Houston’s next seven points to trim the deficit to 50-35 with 3:08 remaining in the half.

That would be as close as they would get for the duration of the game.

The Rockets trailed by a 30-point deficit six-and-a-half minutes into the fourth quarter.  The last Warriors’ dagger came from Ian Clark to closed out the scoring in the game with a three-point play with 21.1 seconds left, putting the finishing touch on the Warriors’ 114-81 victory.

With this win the Warriors advanced to the NBA’s Conference Semifinals, and get at least three days off before their next series, more if the injury-ravaged Los Angeles Clippers can somehow win in Portland on Friday to force a Game 7.

That means Curry will have a full week of rest before the Warriors play another game.

Tickets for the Warriors’ second round matchup will be available during exclusive presales this week and made available to the general public on April 29.
