Warriors’ Curry Starter on NBA All-Star Game
2016.01.22 – Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been named a starter on the NBA Western Conference All-Star team for the third consecutive year, the league announced today.
Curry, a three-time All-Star and the first Warriors player to be named an All-Star starter in three-straight years since Rick Barry from 1974-76, finished second in the overall voting behind only Lakers guard Kobe Bryant.
Curry, 27, is on pace to become the first Warrior to lead the league in scoring since Barry in 1966-67, averaging an NBA-best 29.9 points to go with 6.5 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.10 steals for Golden State, which is the fourth team in league history to win 39 of its first 43 games.
After averaging 23.8 points during his MVP campaign in 2014-15, the seventh-year guard has increased his scoring average by 6.1 points this season, seeing the highest year-over-year scoring average of any reigning MVP in league history.
Curry is on pace to hit better than 50 percent from the field (.509), 40 percent from three-point range (.449, fifth in the NBA) and 90 percent from the free throw line (.907, second), which would make him the ninth player in NBA history to hit percentages of 50/40/90 through the course of an entire season.
Curry, who broke his own NBA record for single-season three-point field goals with 286 triples in 2014-15, leads the league in threes for a fourth consecutive season (196).
After helping Golden State capture its first title in 40 years, Curry led the Warriors to a 24-0 overall start to the 2015-16 campaign, the most consecutive wins to begin a season in NBA history, and a 28-game regular-season win streak dating back to the 2014-15 season, the second-longest streak in league annals.
The Warriors set a franchise-record with 14-straight road wins and have won a franchise-best 37-straight regular-season home games dating back to 2014-15.
Curry earned Western Conference Player of the Week honors in three of the season’s first six weeks and captured the Western Conference Player of the Month Award for games played in October/November, a stretch that saw the Warriors go 19-0.
Curry has taken part in NBA All-Star Weekend in five of his previous six campaigns, averaging 13.5 points, 8.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds in his two previous All-Star Game appearances in 2014 & 2015.
The Davidson product has also participated in the Three-Point Contest four times (2010, 2013-15)—winning the event last year with a record score of 27 points that included 13 consecutive threes in the championship round—in addition to taking part in the Shooting Stars Competition (2014 & 2015) and the Rising Stars Challenge (2010 & 2011) and winning the Skills Challenge in 2011.
Joining Curry in the Western Conference starting lineup are Kobe Bryant (Lakers), Kevin Durant (Thunder), Kawhi Leonard (Spurs) and Russell Westbrook (Thunder).
The Eastern Conference starters are Carmelo Anthony (Knicks), Paul George (Pacers), LeBron James (Cavaliers), Kyle Lowry (Raptors) and Dwyane Wade (Heat).
The 65th NBA All-Star Game in Toronto will tip-off Sunday, Feb. 14 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, the first All-Star Game to be held outside of the U.S.
The game will be seen by fans in more than 200 countries and territories and will be heard in more than 40 languages.
TNT will televise the All-Star Game for the 14th consecutive year, Turner Sports’ 31st year of NBA All-Star coverage.
