49ers new identity is power football Carlos Hyde
SANTA CLARA – The new offensive identity name for the San Francisco 49ers is Carlos Hyde.
Jim Tomsula – first year coach for the 49ers – declared its identity to a national television audience on Monday Night Football, and that identity is power run football in 2015.
The 49ers turn loose Hyde on an unprepared Minnesota Vikings defense on Monday night and he was inventive, amassing 168 yards on 26 carries, scoring the only two touchdowns of the night. The 235-pound running back carried his team to a 20-3 victory.
The Niners’ new zone blocking scheme fit Hyde perfectly. His balance and vision allowed him to be calm as his line blocked with ease against an overmatched Vikings.
Hyde will need to match that level of production against the Pittsburg Steelers, as the 49ers passing game never found rhythm with Colin Kaepernick.
The 49ers quarterback was 17-of-26 for 165 yards, and showed less dangerous passing, but productive with his feet. Kaepernick had time to throw, but chose wisely not to hook up with his wide receivers due to their lack of sufficient separation.
Power football or smash-mouth attack, can only be possible with a healthy running back team. And free agent signee Reggie Bush was carted off with a calf injury two rushes into his 49ers career.
Now Bush is out for the Steelers game and will leave Jarryd Hayne as the second to Hyde on the running game. A one dimensional team can work if is a good and healthy one.
The question remains, how will the 49ers play against a viable Steelers defense, the answer is anyone’s guess. What we know for sure, is Tomsula’s game plan, and you can expect it for the rest of the season.
We now know that Hyde can be the real deal and a possible superstar in this league, in large due to the 49ers’ run blocking scheme.
The 49ers’ left no doubt, they will be the grinders in the run game all season long, making holes on the front and back lines. It’s up to Hyde to be patient and find those gaps.
“I have to read,” Hyde said of the zone blocking scheme. “My offensive line does a great job of zone blocking and make it easy for me to hit those cutbacks I was hitting. There’s a pretty good chance there’s going to be a hole there, and I need to hit it.”
Tomsula’s new player proved to be better than everyone expected. There is lots of talent on this running back. He is high energy. He is aggressive. He is fast.
