Warriors beat Cavaliers NBA Finals Game 5
Series 3-2, one more to go for the title.
OAKLAND – The Stephen Curry magic show was beautiful – Now you see it now you don’t – on Matthew Dellavedova on a historic show of MVP ball handling, plus a dagger splash to culminate the game.
Fourth quarter Game 5 of the NBA Finals was Curry’s game to take and he took the game from LeBron James and never looked back. To seal the game, he sank another 3-pointer from 29 feet away…Splash!
The Warriors are just one win away from the NBA championship after Curry led the Warriors to a 104-91 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday for a 3-2 lead in the series.
The MVP poured in 37 points, with his sixth 3-pointer giving the Warriors a 96-86 lead with 2:44 left. His seventh, coming after the Cavaliers failed to foul him, was the dagger kill shot.
Curry was 13 for 23 from the field, including 7 for 13 from 3-point range, as the barrage overcame LeBron James’ big numbers.
James notched another triple-double with 40 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Warriors’ Splash shooting night.
Golden State was 12 for 26 from 3-point range, as its historic long-distance shooting was too much.
Draymond Green added 16 points and Andre Iguodala, making his second straight start, had 14. Klay Thompson, who scored 12 points, raised his index finger as he walked off the court. One more win, and the Warriors have their title.
The Dubs got off to a fast tempo start, taking an 8-2 lead as the Cavaliers committed five turnovers.
Green scored 10 of the Warriors’ first 14 points, reaching that mark after hitting a free throw following J.R. Smith’s flagrant foul.
The Cavaliers change tempo going with small-ball after center Timofey Mozgov was taken out of the game, answering to match the Warriors’ pace and finish the quarter tied at 22.
James racked up 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the first half alone to match his scoring total from Game 4.
The dominance of the four-time MVP was astonishing, scoring left and right, with 16 of the 17 scores assisted or scored by James.
The Warriors had to deal with controversial calls that shifted momentum.
Green screamed at an official after being called for a double foul with Dellavedova, who appeared to lock Green’s arm for a takedown off a Curry 3-pointer.
Dellavedova, once again, was credited with a steal after kicking the ball away from Curry, and two free throws on the other end enabled the Cavaliers to take a 45-44 lead.
The Warriors did retake the lead at halftime after Harrison Barnes had a tremendous dunk on James while being fouled by the King, as the 3-point play put them up 51-50 headed to the locker room.
In the third quarter, Curry and Iguodala hit back-to-back 3-pointers before Leandro Barbosa scored the Warriors’ last four points to give them a 73-67 lead heading into the final period. Barbosa finished with 13 points, giving the Warriors a lift off the bench.
James and Iman Shumpert responded with back-to-back 3-pointers of their own to tie the score at 75. James gave the Cavs the lead with a 34-foot 3-pointer, but then the Splash brothers Curry and Thompson struck back with back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Warriors an 85-80 lead.
Iguodala hit a shot from long distance and then scored on a putback to extend the lead to 91-84.
